WHAT'S HERITAGE

  • sets of assets acquired by inheritance
  • cultural: with regard to culture
  • culture: a set of lifestyles, customs knowledge, and degree of artistic, scientific, industrial development, in an epoch social group, etc.
  • according to its value
    • historical heritage
    • artistic heritage (beauty, aesthetics, decoration)
    • cultural heritage ( is localized)
  • cultural asset
    • examples: monumental architecture, works of art, minor or popular architecture, military, and defensive architecture

WHY PRESERVING HERITAGE?

  • preservation is a method of not losing the values of cultural identity
  • values of heritage: cultural value, artistic value, historical value, the value of authenticity, value of antiquity, functional/social value, economic value- important to recognize and to teach the next generation the importance of preserving
  • CATALOG: Spain rule: interes cultural. Use it in order to make a list of the important thing that needs to be preserved
  • legislative instruments 1- to protect: 2- Inventory: (list with some restrictions, in Spain) ( in other countries a restriction by years)

HOW TO PRESERVE

  • legislative instruments
    1. To protect: legal actions, administrative rules outside the intervention on the monument itself
    2. Inventory: the result of a list, to describe a set of properties
    3. To list: the action of cataloging involves the enumeration, description, and location of a property
  • interventions
    • preservation: operations to be performed on the good to ensure survival against hazards or possible damages
    • maintenance: an operation designed to prolong and maintain as long as possible the materials from which the object is made
    • consolidation: a particular way of preserving
    • repairing: fix damaged parts
    • restoration: it supposes a direct intervention on the monument whose purpose is the restitution or improvement of the legibility that is lost with the passage of time
    • adaptation: enable or return something to its old state of efficiency or functionality
    • reconstruction: a procedure of integral or partial reconstruction of the building. It is distinguished from restoration by the introduction of new material
    • anastylosis: archaeological term for a unique whereby a ruined building or monument is rebuilt using original architectural elements
    • ripristinar: returning a building to a known earlier state by removing accretions or by resembling existing elements
