The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art was designed by the architectural office SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa). It was constructed in 2004 and it is located in the center of Kazanawa city next to the Kenrokuen, one of the most beautiful and famous gardens of Japan. The total surface is 27,920m² and it is *divided in four parts: the museum (*17.069m²), the parking lot (10,557m²), the bycicle parking (53m²) and finally the project room (241m²).
These are three aspects that caught my attention:
- minimalism
It is admirable that with a circular form and a simple interior design the building is capable to express peace and balance. Moreover, this gives more importance to art exhibitions and the surrounding park.
- transparency
As a result of using glass, the place projects openness and brightness. What's more important there's a feeling of coexistence between the people inside and outside the museum.
- Distribution
Even though there is only a circular building, inside there are several galleries, with different proportions and light conditions. Permitting it to be usable and practical for what is made for.
